Keep away from moisture
Sweat, rain, and steamy bathrooms cause the fastest tarnishing. Take it off before your shower or workout — not after you spot water marks.
Perfume and lotion go on first
Spray, let it dry for about a minute, then put your jewelry on. Cosmetic chemicals are the single biggest cause of PVD discoloration.
Remove before pools and open water
Chlorine and salt water pit metal plating in a way that can't be reversed. Take pieces off before you swim, not after.
Store each piece in its own compartment
Use the pouch or box it arrived in. Crystal settings scratch each other when pieces share a drawer or jewelry roll.
Take it off before you sleep
A full night of tossing and turning is enough to bend a prong or stress a clasp. Make it part of your bedtime routine.
Remove it before you're active
The gym, a run, a yoga class — sweat combined with friction is the fastest way to dull a PVD finish.
Wipe it down
A soft microfiber cloth — the kind you'd use on a phone screen or sunglasses — is all you need. Skip polishing cloths and jewelry cleaner sprays; both are more abrasive than they look and can strip the finish over time.
Check the details
Give the stones and clasp a quick once-over. Catching a loose setting the night of the event is a lot easier than catching it three weeks later.
Put it back in its box
The padded box or pouch it came in is doing real work — it keeps air and light off the metal and keeps the piece from knocking against anything else.
Pat it dry right away with a soft cloth and lay it flat to air-dry completely before putting it back in its box. Don't use a hairdryer or other heat — heat is harder on the plating than the water was.
PVD (physical vapor deposition) is how the gold and rhodium finish is applied to your piece. It bonds more tightly and holds its color longer than traditional plating — but "more durable" isn't "indestructible." The finish still needs the basics: no water, no chemicals, no daily friction.
